Full Description
Forms part of a late C19th/early C20th terrace on the north eastern side of London Road. This originally consisted of three separate dwellings but has been combined to form one large commercial premises. The ground floor is covered with stucco which has been scored to give the impression of large block construction and painted a bright orange colour. There are six openings at the ground floor level, two for each of the original three buildings including two doors, one at each of the far ends of the façade and four large windows. The top of each of these openings is rounded and all have central keystones. A string course forms a continuous sill to all the ground floor windows. There are seven stuccoed pilasters with moulded capitals located between these windows and doors supporting the commercial fascia which stretches across the whole of the ground floor with an original cornice above. The upper stories are in an exposed red brick with stone detailing. There are three, large, equally spaced bowed windows at the first floor level, originally one per dwelling located centrally. The base of each rests on the protruding cornice over the ground floor. There is dentil detailing at the cornice level of all these windows and flat metallic roofs over. There are six windows at the second floor level (two per building) all with small protruding stone sills. There is a stone band immediately below the eaves at the top of the second floor, with a stone string course at the bottom. The tops of the second floor windows rest immediately below this string course. There are two further stone bands crossing this façade; one at the base of the second floor, aligning with the sills of the second floor windows and another aligning with the top of the first floor windows, these are painted orange to match the ground floor. There is some weathering and damage to the brickwork and the stone detailing on the upper floors of these buildings and several modern features are attached to the façade at various locations. These modern features include a security system with its associated wiring. Four large metal flag poles and numerous waste water and gutter down pipes. Overall, despite some untidiness and weathering to the architectural details, the building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
There are two doors at the ground floor level, the southern is larger than the northern and provides the main ground floor access. The northern is in timber painted cream and appears to be blocked. Both are modern and have small arched windows above the transom over the door. There are four large windows between these two doors, all have an arched upper half and are divided into four panes; a large rectangular lower pane with three small upper panes above. The frames for all of these windows are in timber painted cream. There three large bowed windows at the first floor level and six smaller flat windows at the second floor level. All are later plastic insertions and in a good condition.
The roof is gabled and in slate with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. A brick stack is located over the former site of the party wall between No’s 9 and 10. Metallic flashing is located at the base of the roof where it meets the stone cornice below. Overall the roof structure appears to be in a good condition. (1)
