Full Description
Forms part of a late C19th/early C20th terrace on the north eastern side of London Road. The ground floor has a modern commercial use though some of the original shop front details have been retained including the consoles over the party walls and the protruding cornice at the top of the ground floor. There are two doors, both are located within a recessed porch area on the north western side of the façade. One provides access to the upper floors while the other, which is located within the return towards the first, provides access to the commercial ground floor. There is a large window on the south eastern side of this recessed porch. The area beneath this window is rendered, painted and scored to give the impression of large block construction. The upper stories are in an exposed red brick with stone detailing. There is a single, large, centrally placed, bowed window at the first floor level. There is detailing painted black at the cornice level of this window and a flat metallic roof over. There are two windows at the second floor level both with small protruding stone sills. There is a stone band immediately below the eaves at the top of the second floor, with a stone string course at the bottom, both the string course and the stone band are badly weathered and worn. The tops of the second floor windows rest immediately below this string course. There are two further stone bands crossing this façade; one at the base of the second floor, aligning with the sills of the second floor windows and another aligning with the top of the first floor window. Again, these are weathered and worn. A gutter down pipe run from the top of the second floor down to the pavement level over the south eastern party wall. A quantity of untidy wiring is located at various locations on the facade, associated with a aerial attached to the stack at the roof level. Overall, despite some untidiness and weathering to the architectural details, the building appears to be structurally sound and in a fairly good condition.
There are two doors, both are located within a recessed porch area on the north western side of the façade. One provides access to the upper floors, this is modern and in a treated timber with four panels, the upper two of which are glazed. The other, which is located within the return towards the first, provides access to the commercial ground floor, this was not clearly seen but is also likely modern. The return towards the recessed door is also glazed and there is a large window on the south eastern side of the porch this is divided into six panes, three large lower panes and three small upper. The frames of the windows and doors are in timber painted white. There is a single large bowed window at the first floor level and two small windows at the second floor level. All are later plastic insertions and in a good condition.
The roof is gabled and in slate with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. A brick stack is located over the south eastern party wall and has a large aerial attached to it. Metallic flashing is located at the base of the roof where its meets the stone cornice below. Overall the roof structure appears to be in a good condition. (1)
