Full Description

Forms the north western end of a block of five (20-24) Victorian dwellings located on the north eastern side of London Road, at the junction between London Road and Churchill Street. It is in a brown brick with rendered and painted (cream) ground floor and basement level and red brick and stone detailing. It is narrower than the other buildings present within this short terrace and the main ground floor access is within the northern (side) elevation which fronts onto Churchill Street. The access is through a recessed porch within the elevation and up a set of four steps. There is a gothic arch over the entrance to the porch and a small modern metal gate covers it. Two windows align with this ground floor opening, one at the first floor and another at the second floor level. There are three further windows on this side of the building, two at the ground floor level and one small opening at the basement level, just above the pavement, the two ground floor windows are likely later insertions. There is a basement level door inserted into the central portion of a canted bay window on the London Road side of the building and there are five further windows located across this side of the façade. The ground floor and basement level windows consist of large three light canted bays, one on top of the other with rendered mullions. The tops of the openings within this bay at the first floor level are rounded. There are two windows on both the first and second floor levels, these are closely spaced and align with the bay windows below. All first floor windows (including the one on the Churchill Street side) have a gothic arches over with red brick detailing and a decorative stone keystone above, while the tops of the second floor windows rest directly below the eaves. The render over the ground floor and basement level continues onto the side elevation and stops just below the first floor windows, this is chipped and cracked at various locations on both sides of the building. There is a rendered string course at its top which forms a continuous sill to all of the first floor windows. This string course is painted black and there are some chips to this paintwork. A modern gutter down pipe is located over the south eastern party wall, running from the eaves down to the basement level. There is a low rendered and painted (white) brick wall separating the basement area from the street level with a possibly original and decorative iron railing above. The render on this wall is slightly chipped and cracked. Overall, despite some untidiness, the building is in a good condition and appears to be structurally sound.

The ground floor within the porch is modern as is the basement level door which is plastic. The ground floor and basement level windows consist of large, three light, canted bays, one on top of the other with rendered mullions. The windows within these two bays are all modern with plastic frames. The first and second floor windows on the London Road side are also modern plastic insertions. The first and second floor windows on the Churchill Road side are possibly original two pane timber framed sashes. the other windows on this side are later. Overall all windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof is hipped with concrete tiles. There is a rendered stack over the party wall. It is in a good condition with no signs of bowing or slipped tiles, though there is some lichen growth.(1)
