Monument record TQ 67 SW 1509 - Northfleet Roman villa western range aisled barn - post holes

Summary

As part of the Northfleet Roman villa complex, a large aisled structure was constructed c. 60m west of the main villa, probably in the 3rd century. It was 14m wide and at least 28m long and comprised masonry walls and two lines of internal post holes. (1) Ten post holes were identified, mostly in the northern half of the building where later quarrying had been less intense. The post holes averaged 1.30 m wide and 0.90 m deep. All had vertical sides and flat or concave bases. Four post holes contained post-pipes, which recorded the base of the posts in the holes, where they had rotted. Two post-holes within the southeast part of the barn appear to reveal a partition or entrance into a room. Location accurate to 1m based on available information.
