22 Effingham Street was considered for designation as a Listed Building in 2019 but rejected. The report said "22 Effingham Street is an attached town house which probably dates from the C17 or earlier. It stands on the western side of the former Brick Street (now Effingham Street)...

The stucco covering the front elevation is rendered and scored to imitate ashlar stone, and the two small casement windows have leaded-lights. There are no other discernible architectural details, apart from a C20 replacement front door, within a round-headed arch. The roof has clay-tiles which may be original, and the half-hipped roof form and chimney stack, have a south-eastern vernacular character. The southern elevation has some exposed bricks which appear to be hand-made. The rear elevation has been extended, but no obvious C17 material can be seen from the fire station yard. The house was probably updated to its current form when the fire station was constructed in the early C20. The core of 22 Effingham Street could have C17 or earlier origins, placing it in the date range where all buildings are presumed to be of special interest. However the specific guidance for vernacular houses explains that this significance should assist our understanding of how the building was used. 22 is adjacent to a number of listed terrace houses which represent a later phase of development, when the street was renamed in the late C18. It is also adjacent to the aforementioned early-C20 fire station (NHLE reference 1101734, listed at Grade II), which itself was constructed within an early-C18 house. As such, there is group value achieved through a co-location with diverse buildings of different types and dates." (1)
