[Area TQ 60184414] Newefrith. Bloomery 50 deg. 10' 25" N. 0 deg. 17' 30" E. No place-names. This small bloomery, close to Bornemill Farm, may conjecturally be identified with "Newefrith juxta Bournemelne" mentined in the accounts of Southfirth of 1340. Bournemill is now a farm to the south west of Somerhill Park. (2) Although little cinder remains, the site show considerable signs of occupation and there are several minepits near by. The cinder is amorphous, black or olive-green fracture, sometimes slightly vesticular. (1-2) No cinder was found and no signs of occupation definitely recognized. The ground in the vicinity of the confluence of the two streams (TQ 60154418) is, however, of an uneven nature. (3) A newly dug trench at 'A' TQ 60184409 has exposed a few pieces of cinder. (4) A Southfrith bloomery, Newfrith-juxta-Bournemelne, was leased by Robert Springet in 1340. (not mentioned in the checklist of all known Wealden bloomeries). (5)
