Full Description
In April/May 1941 the army constructed a buried dugout at 12 North Foreland Road, Broadstairs. The precise function of the structure is unknown but it was fairly small, possibly a tunnel under the road. After the war the building was owned by St Stephen's school and the tunnel may have been used by children to cross the road. In 2019 the current qwners of the building said that the tunnel is still there but the entrance in the front garden has been blocked up.
A report on the sussex Archaeology Forum quoting an un-named source said :
"In late April and early May 1941, six men from 171 Tunnelling Company R.E. were sent to 11th Group R.A. Headquarters at "Wynstow", North Foreland Road, Broadstairs, to expedite the completion of a small H.Q. Dugout. 15 timber sets, 100' of lagging and 4 Bays of large Colliery Arches were sent from 171's stores. By week-ending 17th May, three of the large arches had been installed, but progress was slowed by difficulties that were encountered with disposing of the spoil from the site. Five Colliery Arches were eventually installed underground, and the men returned to their Unit on 21st May." (1)
