Full Description
['A': TQ 62084487; 'B': TQ 62104490] (3) A bloomery, at Tudeley, south of the church, lat 51 deg. 10 ' 45" N. Long 0 deg. 19' 16 " E. Place names: Smithy Wood, Blacksmith's Fields, Upper and Lower Ashpit Fields, Ashpond Field. Large cinder, similar to 15th c. type, in Devil's Gill and in the bed of a small steam. A small rectangular depression nearby may have had some connection with the forge, mentioned in 14th century accounts. (1,2) 'A' marks the furnace-site and 'B' the site of a large mine-pit. (3) The field is now under pasture and the sites 'A' and 'B' are not now apparent. The whole of the lower slope of the field has, however, many shallow depressions of early mine-pit type. No cinder was found.(4) It is possible that the sitings by Authy. 3 are in error; a deeply sunken pond, resembling a mine-pit, at TQ 62224474 is possibly site 'B', and, if so, a depression, once a stream, running from it towards Devil's Gill may have been that in which cinder was found. There is, however, a complete absence of cinder visible in either of the pasturefields concerned and no definite identification of the site of this furnace could be made. (5) The bloomeries at Tudely are documented in 14th century accounts held in the Public Record Office, London (see 1 and 2). Tudely is the best known of the works that were run as part of a landed estate ie. the Southfrith lands of the Clares. Accounts begin in 1329 and over the space of 40 years document severalchanges in the way the works were run. It ceased to be leased or worked before 1370. The position of the bloomeries follows the pattern of the production of blooms taking place within the forest andsecondary working in villages and towns. (Although mentioned in the text the bloomeries are not listed in gazetteer A, a checklist of bloomeries). (6)
