Full Description

During a heavy ENE. gale, whilst attempting to reach the shelter of the narrows by crossing the shallows on a falling tide, despite being advised by the master of the smack PROSPERINE, that this was hazardous, this sloop struck the Spaniard Sand. She then freed herself but stranded on the Columbine, where she unshipped her rudder, so that she had to be anchored. The anchor cable then parted, and whilst James Bell, the master of the PROSPERINE, which was at hand, went off in his smack to get help, on returning found the LARK over on her beam ends, her decks awash and the crew in the rigging. The vessel became a total loss along with its cargo. Master: Burrows. J Date of Loss Qualifier: A Additional sources cited in United Kingdom Shipwreck Index. Eastbourne Ref.Lib.SWA.04.02.1822 (1)
