Full Description

HM. destroyer MILNE, Cdr. V. L. A. Campbell, DSO. RN., was on patrol near No.7a buoy when a German submarine was sighted on the surface heading east, at 11.50pm. With the German vessel three points off the MILNE's port bow, the latter put her engines to full ahead intending to ram. UC- 26 attempted to dive but was struck by the destroyers bow before she could submerge. A great deal of oil and wreckage came to the surface and two survivors were picked up by HMS. MIRANDA. These were her commanding officer, Graf Von Schmettow and Reserve Sub.Lieut. Heinrich Petersen. From them it was learned that the submarine went straight to the bottom, the two officers having been blown back to the surface by air pressure, the captain was in the engine room when UC-26 sank.
