Full Description

During an excavation in 1976 by the Dartford District Archaeological Group, a series of walls, foundations and drains were found associated with the use of the site of Dartford Priory during the medieval and Tudor periods. The exact location of the excavation is unknown but it is described as "about 30m (100 ft) to the north of the surviving gatehouse".

The excavation discovered a stone wall over 2 m high and running east-west. The wall had originally formed part of the Priory buildings but had subsequently been incorproated into the Tudor manor house and partly faced in red brick. Other walls had joined it and the excavation revealed a complex of walls running both parallel and at right-angles to each other. Two of the walls lined up with the gatehouse suggesting that it defined a complete wing with a courtyard. Immediately to the east were two large garderobe cisterns, one of which contained a 15th century double bowl condiment dish dating to the 15th century. Carved stones from the garderobes were removed and deposited in Dartford Musuem (1)
