Summary

An iron bloom was found during excavation of the paddock behind Forge Farm Cottages in 2016, and interpreted as dating to c. 340 BC on the basis of a match with finds from an excavation in 2014 within Brokes Wood on the western side of Powder Mill Lane.

Full Description

The report on excavation of wattle and daub buildings behind Forge Farm Cottages mentions a previous excavation in 2014 of a middle iron age bloomery furnace in Brokes Wood, located on the opposite (western) side of Powder Mill Lane c. 500m away from the wattle and daub building. The iron bloom found in the paddock matched exactly the contours of stone anvil was recovered from the furnace site and several of the partially worked blooms. (1-2)
