Summary

During the excavation of a lift shaft within 34 Biggin Street undertaken in the 1980's, about 6 layers of Roman pebble metalling was revealed over natural brickearth. It is possible that this metalling represents part of a Roman road leading out of Dubris though this is not confirmed. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information).

Full Description

During the excavation undertaken in the 1980's of a lift shaft within 34 Biggin Street to a depth of around 1.8m below the ground level, about 6 layers of Roman pebble metalling was revealed over natural brickearth. This metalling was associated with a sherd of Samian ware pottery. It is possible that this metalling represents part of a Roman road leading out of Dubris though this is not confirmed. No further information about the features of finds is available (pres comms with Keith Parfitt)
