Full Description
A previously unknown Middle Iron Age bloomery furnace, possibly situated within an earlier prehistoric earthwork in Brokes Wood. Initially a a spread of ferrous material on an obvious large earthen mound was found, and then a wide spread of bloomery slag across the site was identified. An evaluation in 2014 revealed the first evidence for the remains of a furnace, and subsequently produced two secure carbon dates of 340 BC and 220 BC. In addition to bloomery slag, oven superstructure fragments, an assemblage of worked flint, a 'tinned metal' object (MKE97218), a smithing hammer, hammerscale, charcoal, pottery and a limestone 'cover' and anvil were found.
