Full Description
A large spread of bloomery slag was indentified on the north-west edge of a quarry on Chowning Bank, Southborough, apparently associated with a spread of limestone (chalk). A series of photos were taken and several slag examples were uncovered. The material is undated, but the report notes nearly Iron Age sites, including the bloomery furnace site in Brokes Wood (TQ 54 SE 270). "It would seem reasonable to assume that a Bloomery Furnace (remains of) was constructed nearby". (1)
