Full Description

During the monitoring of mains service test pits associated with a proposed new sewer scheme throughout the town of New Romney, a clay floor relating to a medieval building was revealed on Lydd Road. An occupational deposit associated with this floor contained trampled sea shell, carbon as well as animal and fish bone. Beneath this floor a further floor occupation deposit containing large amounts of domestic rubbish was encountered including more animal remains as well as slate, brick, and pottery sherds dating from 1225-1300. Within this floor a was an area of burnt orange clay covered in a thick deposit of carbon and possibly suggesting the presence of an open hearth or oven. A surface of scorched narrow yellow bricks was close to and just above the level of this layer of carbon, within which was a pit containing a sizeable ceramic vessel of West Kent Fine Sandy ware dated to between 1150-1250.
