Full Description
During the monitoring of mains service test pits associated with a proposed new sewer scheme throughout the town of New Romney, a large medieval cess pit was discovered on Church Road. Only one corner of the feature was revealed during the investigation and the base extended beyond the limit of the excavation. The pit was overlain by a deposit containing large lumps of ragstone rubble and pottery dating to between 1250 and 1350 suggesting that this feature is possibly associated with the former site of a building close by and that it must predate the mid fourteenth century.
