During an archaeological evaluation which took place in 2005 on a plot of land at The Elms, Dymchurch Road, New Romney prior to redevelopment, a series of refuse pits were located. These cut into natural wind blown sands and pottery retrieved from these pits indicate that they pre date the erection of the school house here in 1863. The pits possibly relate to a property fronting Dymchurch road which had been demolished by this time. The pits were sealed by a redeposited layer of dune sand which possibly represents a levelling deposit. (1)

further pits were also discovered at this site during excavations in the following year carried out by Archaeology Sout East. (2)
