Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation which took place in 2005 on a plot of land at The Elms, Dymchurch Road, New Romney prior to redevelopment, a stone lined well was uncovered. The stratigraphy indicates that this feature is quite late, possibly 19th century in date. The stone used in the lining (limestone) is possibly re-used from an earlier building in the vicinity. The well was deliberately capped by a layer of clay after it had been backfilled. This well likely relates to occupation along Dymchurch Road frontage and may have been dug in the rear garden of a property that had been demolished prior to the construction of The Elms. Alternatively they relate to ‘Stone House’, situated a few metres to the south of the site. (1)
