Full Description
During a watching brief undertaken within the churchyard of St Nicholas Church in New Romney during the excavation of drainage trenches and soakaway pits, a quantity of disarticulated human bones was uncovered within a deposit immediately below the modern topsoil. This deposit consisted of a mid dark grey silty sandy soil containing occasional fragments of ragstone, flint, slate, crushed mortar and peg-tile as well as rounded beach pebbles. The bone fragments were dispersed throughout the deposit and clearly indicates the presence of burials in this portion of the churchyard immediately north of the existing church. (1)
