Full Description

During a watching brief undertaken within the churchyard of St Nicholas Church in New Romney for the excavation of drainage trenches and soakaway pits, two wall foundations were revealed. The first was located running alongside the eastern buttress of the first bay and extended below the maximum depth of the trench. It was constructed from ‘Kentish’ soft red bricks and bonded using a pale mid creamy grey fine grit lime mortar. Though no datable evidence was retrieved from the deposits abutted either side of the foundation, the type of mortar and the bricks would suggest a late 17th or early 18th century date. The second wall foundation was exposed midway between the fifth and sixth buttresses and was constructed of medium/large pieces of ragstone bonded using a lime mortar. It has not been securely dated but it is of a possible medieval date. It is possible that it once formed part of the return of the churchyard boundary wall and there is also the possibility that it represents an element of a previously unknown feature, such as a chapel or a monument attached to the north side of the church.
