Full Description

During archaeological excavation in 2016, a large curvilinear ditch was discovered containing a pottery assemblage suggesting a late iron age / early Roman date. The ditch was recut, probably in the late iron age, although the date of the re-cut could not be identified. The ditch was 'v' shaped and had a flat base. It could be traced for 13 m. Eight postholes extended from the entrance to the enclosure (at the south-west) for at least 16 m. All the features contained pottery from the early iron age onwards but most was from the late iron age to very early Roman period. The ditch appeared to have been deliberately backfilled in the late iron age or early Roman period and a child inhumation was inserted into the ditch.

Roman activity on the site appeared to be focused on a large sub-circular feature (possibly a quarry) that may have been placed to block the entrance to the enclosure to the north. (1)
