Full Description

An assessment of the site prior to redevelopment concluded that the property is on the site of a potentially significant courtyard building shown on a map of 1640. The current buildings are later 19th century / early 20th century and originated as a coach-makers residence and workshop.

The assessors also concluded: "Archaeological evidence from the locality indicates that this area of Canterbury has beenoccupied almost continuously since at least the late Iron Age. A principal Roman roadleading towards the town’s north gate passes through the area, and evidence of Roman
buildings and later Anglo-Saxon buildings are recorded. A thoroughfare corresponding
with the line of the present Orange Street may have been established by the Anglo-Saxon
period, and documentary evidence indicates that by the twelfth century properties had
developed along both sides of the street."(1)
