Full Description

A 2005 archaeological evaluation carried out in advance of residential housing located a late medieval surface and boundary ditch. Late medieval occupation within the proposed development area was present, with two
features identified. These consisted of an area of gravel metalling identified in trench 1,
at a depth of 0.31 m. below the modern ground surface level, perhaps forming an external
courtyard surface or internal floor fronting Reculver Road; and a NE to SW aligned field
boundary ditch identified in trench 2, and continuing to the east in trench 7, at a depth of 0.31
m. below the modern ground surface level Residual late medieval pottery was also recovered. The low density of features suggested that the main focus of medieval occupation was outside the evaluation area. No definition of 'late medieval' was provided in the report.

Three undated palaeochannels were also found.(1)
