Full Description
The former site of a battery is located close toWaterloo Crescent and Granville Gardens, named North's Battery possibly after Frederick North (Lord North), 2nd Earl of Guilford – Prime Minister. It was constructed with a series of other coastal batteries in Dover (Townshend, Guilford and Amherst) in the late 18th century probably during time of American Revolutionary Wars or French Revolutionary Wars ( 1770s or early 1780s). The fort was demolished prior to the construction of the eastern block of Waterloo Crescent in the 1830's. It is noted in the histories of the town which were produced throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries (1-2)
Its location is also clearly visible on several historic maps dating to the late 18th and 19th centuries (3-5)
