Full Description
An early plan of the western heights produced in 1787 shows two roads running through the fortification. These are unlikely to have existed in this form for very long as on the 1811 plans they look to have been remodelled.
The first spans the entire length of the high ground, running rough northeast to south west. The north eastern section runs rougly along the route of North Military road but at the point where North Military Road turns towards the south, this road continues to the south west to a point just south of the North Centre and Detached bastion. Here there is a junction and the road splits. One portion of it continues towards the cidadel and enters it at its north eastern corner (the position of the C18th gate). The other portion heads south towards Archcliffe. (1)
