An archaeological evaluation carried out in 2007 found extensive structural remains to the west of No. 1 Westgate Grove. The remains consisted of numerous late medieval (AD 1250 - 1550), and post medieval and later walls and features that may relate to a mill that is documented on historic maps. From the features and demolition debris a sequence of flood (detected in the deposits), abandonment and demolition was suggested.

All the remains were from the area west of the building where 15 masonry walls were found. The first phase, of chalk and flint construction was late medieval to early 16th century. The seocnd and third phases were post medieval in date and may have related to the mill race discovered in the river. An area investigated east of the house produced no meaningful discoveries. (1)
