Full Description

A very large concentration (ca. 1500–2000) of lithic artefacts was found in the grey clay to the south of trench D where the elephant butchery site was uncovered. The concentration extended east–west across the full width of the surviving sediments, so its original extent is unknown. Stratigraphically, the concentration occurs at a similar horizon to the Palaeoloxodon (elephant) skeleton, although altitudinally it is at a higher level. Some pieces of large bone were found amongst the flint artefact concentration, but the bone was very poorly preserved. This area may have been drier and less frequently flooded, perhaps making it more amenable for occupation and knapping activity. The flint assemblage is significantly larger than that associated with the elephant. Preliminary examination has established that the artefacts include a similar range of globular cores, large unworked flake-tools and a range of simple notched flakes. Even in this much larger assemblage, there is no sign of handaxe manufacture. (1-2)
