Full Description

AOC Archaeology carried out a watching brief and recording work following scrub clearance on the eastern side of Ingress Park. The remains of a 19th century brick cottage, 10.15m long and 4.6m wide, were uncovered. The building likely dates to the years of 1833-1853 when Ingress was owned by John Harmer. The walls are of red brick and two rooms survive, both which hearths and chimney breasts. Each room has a specific feature of note. The northern room had a lightwell in the western wall; The southern room has a small brick compartment in the southwest corner with heat affected bricks and an associated iron plate. This may be the location of a hot-water system for laundry, for example, though exactly what the cottage was used for is not clear. (1-2)
