Full Description

AOC Archaeology carried out a watching brief and recording work following scrub clearance on the eastern side of Ingress Park. The remains of sunken pathway, which provided a pedestrian route for tours around the estate, was uncovered. The route of the path is visible south of the bridge, where the bank is extant between the base of the historic quarry and the route of lovers Lane as it runs north from London Road. It was cut into the naturally-lain chalk, resulting in a bank to the east and west, which were overlain by small – medium blocks of chalk rubble. The finds evidence for the banks of the sunken path beneath the bridge prove it to have been established no earlier than 1820, and probably after 1840. This may be a surviving element of a walk around the park for visitors, a walk which would have encompassed the follies and grottoes, as well as providing vistas across plantings and views to the Thames.
