During and archaeological watching brief undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd within the graveyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Swanscombe Street, A total of 50 inhumations were excavated and recorded, with charnel from another 20+ bodies. The majority of the burials appeared to date to the late post-medieval period with 3 probable medieval burials. Two of the graves were of a anthropomorphic type which have a probable Medieval date and a third burial, which was cut by one of these anthropomorphic graves, is also thought to be early. The other graves are likely to be post medieval in date. The fact that 50 burials were exhumed from three small trenches indicates how densely the burials lie within the graveyard. However, given the extended history of the church, providing the only burial ground in Swanscombe from the 11th century until the cemetery opened in 1885, this density of burial activity is not unusual.
