Findspot record TQ 67 SW 1720 - Palaeolithic artefacts from Swanscombe Valley Community School

Summary

During evaluation work in 1997 prior to redevelopment at Swanscombe Community School a quantity of worked flints, showing signs of rolling, and handaxes were found. Overall the technology was mostly bifacial. The handaxes are similar to types known from the middle gravels at Barnfield Pit. (location accurate to the nearest 2m based on available information)

Full Description

In detail the artefacts from trench E included a small flint chip from a clayey silt overlying the gravels and four sharp flakes, one of which was soft-hammer struck and from the manufacture of a handaxe, from the gravel itself. Alongside this multiple rolled flakes were discovered from indeterminate technology though some appear to be hard-hammer struck. Trench K revealed rolled debitage within a sandy gravel. Trench D produced a handaxe from the Pleistocene gravels. It was thick butted and neatly worked to a sharp point with the edges straight or slightly concave. It was just under 4 inches long and well made, and hence a Wymer type F. it is typical of the finer specimens recovered from the Barnfield Pit. Alongside this were five pieces of debitage. Trench P revealed a crude pointed handaxe (Wymer type E, and a possible core alongside 7 pieces of flint debitage. Trench L had produced a handaxe (Wymer type E/F) during the initial evaluation works undertaken at the site (TQ 67 SW 221) and further investigation of the trench revealed 7 pieces of Palaeolithic debitage. Finally trench A again contained debitage alongside a core. Overall it is clear that Pleistocene deposits containing Palaeolithic artefacts underly the whole of the Swanscombe Valley community school between 0.5m and 1.5m in depth. No identifiable concentrations of artefacts corresponding to a foci of Palaeolithic activity were discovered, though the recovery of a few un rolled flints may indicate the presence of in situ deposits nearby.
