An archaeological evaluation carried out in 2003 at the Cellarer's Lodge found Roman masonry and a wall capped by an Anglo-Saxon deposit. The Roman masonry potentially represents a wall footing or floor base and was comprised of compact, yellowish sandy mortar with some flint inclusions. The masonry wall is thought to run NE-SW beyond the limits of the pit in which it was excavated. The wall comprised pale grey mortar, uncoursed mortared flint, chalk, residual Roman tile, and crushed-tile mortar.
A possible offset in the wall has been interpreted as the support for the upper floor of a hypocaust, and the wall itself is suggested to represent part of a public building or an elaborate form of town house. (1, 2)
