During mitigation work and sieving of the Pleistocene gravels ahead of development at Swanscombe Community School, an assemblage of lithic artefacts with a Palaeolithic date were recovered. Some of these were in a fresh condition but the majority were rolled and the collection as a whole probably represents a transported assemblage deposited as part of a fluviatile gravel. The collection included handaxes, cores and flaked tools, similar to those recovered from equivalent deposits in the Barnsfield pit. The artefacts generally seemed to be more common at the upper most parts of the gravel and were patichily distributed being abundant in some locations and absent in others. The richest locations were in the top part of the gravels near and within the sieve location 24. (1-2)
