Full Description
During an archaeological evalaution in 2009 a metalled surface was discovered that probably represents the Roman road that ran north-east from Canterbury. A sherd of Roman pottery was embedded in the surface.
The lowest and earliest deposits were exposed in the north-east end of the trench and consisted of two bands of highly compacted gravels separated by a band of silty brickearth, also with high gravel content. The lowest layer consisted entirely of packed gravel and was of unknown thickness, as it extended below the level of excavation. The uppermost layer was identical, with the exception of a fragment of Roman tile embedded in its surface, and was 0.18m thick. The intermediary layer was 100mm thick and consisted of compact grey-brown silty brickearth with very frequent gravel inclusions. The uppermost gravel was sealed by a 0.94m-thick grey-brown silty loam of
homogenous appearance. However, its contents of cultural materials changed with
depth. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century potsherds, along with clay pipe stem
fragments, occurred in the upper level (1)
