Full Description
During mitigation work and sieving of the Pleistocene gravels ahead of development at Swanscombe Community School (Phase 2), two faunal remains were discovered. These included a large bone from a large mammal such as an elephant or a rhino though it was too fragmentary to be identified, the other was a tusk of Palaeoloxodon Antiquus (straight tusked elephant). This too was in a poor condition though its robusticity had led to its preservation, and it was eventually lifted and conserved at the request of the board of governors at Swan Valley School. The finds came from the top 50cm of the gravel. (1)
