Summary

A loopholed wall dating to the Second World War was investigated during Historic Building Recording and excavations carried out by Invicta Archaeological Services at The Wheatsheaf Pub in 2024. The feature is located directly west of a Second World War static water tower (TQ 96 SW 1311).

Full Description

A loopholed wall dating to the Second World War was investigated during Historic Building Recording and excavations carried out by Invicta Archaeological Services at The Wheatsheaf Pub in 2024. The wall measured 3.22m in width and 2.30m in height. Some of the lower levels comprise original Victorian walling, with around 0.80m of the red bricked loopholed wall added above. Three loopholes are located in the wall facing “from west to east, across to the current roundabout where London Road meets East Street” (from the report, 3). The loopholes measure 0.16-0.18m in height and 0.18-0.23m in width. The feature is located directly west of a Second World War static water tower (TQ 96 SW 1311). (1-3)
