Full Description
Archaeological work carried out during electrical works found the masonry forming part of the west wall of the Great Hall of the Archbishop's Palace. At Site 1 (the Careers Centre) a trench was cut through the tarmac surface within Walpole Yard. This revealed the top of a wall constructed of large chalk pieces, and occasional large flints and ragstone, bonded with orange-brown sandy mortar containing small flints and chalk lumps throughout. The width revealed suggests that it formed part of the west wall of the Great Hall of the Archbishop's Palace.
Two abutting sections of masonry may relate to earlier phases of the Great Hall or perhaps earlier buildings.(1)
