Monument record TQ 57 NE 1107 - Area of intact Quaternary stratigraphy, London Road, Swanscombe

Summary

Investigation of a number of sections on an area of land off London Road, Swanscome identified two areas of intact Quaternary stratigraphy. Pleistocene solifluction deposits and colluvial deposits are present in both areas. The solifluction and colluvial deposits may contain Palaeolithic and or Holocene artefacts and ecofacts, although they are likely to be reworked. They also have the broad potential to preserve buried stratigraphy that could include stabilisation horizons/landsurfaces associated with minimally disturbed archaeological evidence and paleoenvironmental datasets. Full Description

They also have the broad potential to preserve buried stratigraphy that could include stabilisation horizons/landsurfaces associated with minimally disturbed archaeological evidence and paleoenvironmental datasets. The units present within the solifluction and alluvial deposits that may also have the potential to
preserve palaeoenvironmental dataset. The extant deposits in Area A appear to be moderately extensive, although their full extent is currently unknown. Those in Area B appear be an isolated remnant. The deposits preserved in both Areas A and B include part of a sequence of slope deposits infilling a valley cut into the chalk bedrock. This valley ran approximately from south-west to north east through the investigation area prior to quarrying. (1)
