Building record TR 15 NW 2447 - Former St Mary, Bredin Church of England school
Summary
The St Mary Bredin School opened in June 1856 as a Church of England school associated with the Church of St Mary Bredin, located to the north of the new school within the city walls. It was funded in part by a charitable building fund. The school is shown on the 1873 Ordnance Survey map, marked as a boys and girls school, broadly L-shaped in plan, probably with a single classroom with an entrance hall to the north-west. By the time of the 1897 OS map, wings had been added to the north-east and south-west ends of the building, along with a small extension to the south-east, providing two additional classrooms.
During the Second World War, the school closed in late November 1940 and was used as a restaurant for the rest of the war. The school remained closed at the end of the war, during which the Church of St Mary Bredin had been destroyed by enemy bombing, and the school was sold in 1951. It was subsequently used as offices by various businesses relating to the motor trade, finally closing in 2014.
