Full Description
The buildings located at 4-12 Lowfield Street Dartfrod were subject to a heritage statement which notes that most likely dates to the second half of the 19th century and has been re-fronted to both elevations.
Lowfield Street clearly has historic origins it was the preferred site for early almshouses on the edge of the town, with the first ‘Lowfield Almshouses’ having been constructed in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1889, in addition to the ‘Bridewell’ built on Lowfield Street in 1720. The Tithe map of 1840, shows the Site was developed with several buildings in a position located between the High Street and the Brewers further south. Buildings fronted the street along Lowfield Street; Market Street was yet to have been created although there is evidence of a passage-way to the south of the Site. The early 20th century OS maps of the area provide greater detail as to the buildings previously on Site. While all the buildings on the eastern part of the plot have since been demolished.
The existing building on the corner of Lowfield Street with Market Street most likely dates to the second half of the 19th century and has been re-fronted to both elevations. (1)
