A rammed chalk deposit was encountered in an area close to the junction of Queen Street and York Street, Dover, during excavations ahead of planting in that area. The deposit is a likely a floor of either Medieval or post medieval date, though no finds were recovered to confirm the date. It was encountered at a depth of between 0.26m and 0.30m below the existing ground surface consisted of a consolidated surface of rammed chalk with rare carbon flecks and occasional pieces of soft red (dark) brick in the immediate surface. The depth of this deposit was not ascertained due to excavation stopping at this level. Sealing the rammed chalk (chalk floor) layer was a 0.20m thick, mid-dark yellow brown silty clay dump with large sub angular flints. This was then sealed by a modern mid brown, soft silty loam topsoil layer between 0.10m – 0.12m thick. (1)
