Monument record TQ 65 NE 445 - Possible location of the 'cwylla', an Anglo-Saxon spring mentioned in a 10th century charter
Summary
A charter of King Edmund (ruled AD 942 to 946) mentions a 'cwylla' or springhead os a feature defining the border of a land grant. This has sometimes been interpreted as the spring at Well Street, 700 m to the east, but a 1970s re-appraisal concluded it was more likely to the the pond at Broadwater Farm. According to Wallenberg the 'cwylla' (now in the parish of East Malling) is the only use of the term in Old English.
