Monument record TQ 57 SW 1112 - Medieval and post-medieval remains 22-26 Spital Street, Dartford

Summary

Archaeological excavation in 2014 found extensive remains dating from the 13th century onwards. In the mid/late 13th century two masonry buildings were constructed of chalk and flint foundations and chalk and earth floors. Two stack-tiled hearths were also found in the south of the site. The buildings continued in use until the 15th century when another building was constructed close to the road. In the 15th or 16th century this in turn was superceded by another stone building. In the 17th century another building was constructed containing a clay pipe furnace.
