Monument record TR 15 NW 2557 - Roman temple remains, Stour Street

An archaeological evaluation and excavation carried out in 2013 found Roman evidence that was interpreted as being related to the north-west portico of the temple precinct and dated to the early 2nd century. The remains consisted of wall foundations, metalled surfaces, beam-slots and postholes.

The earliest remains from the last 1st century comprised beam-slots, a post- and a stake-hole.(Phase 1). The beam-slots appeared to form a timber structure running parallel with the line of a Roman road to the north. The remains were then covered by metallings (Phase 2), and then cut by masonry remains which probably formed part of the Roman temple precinct (Phase 3). (2)
