Monument record TR 15 NE 1894 - Buried tile floor, Great Cloister
Summary
An archaeological excavation carried out in 2014 during the installation of a new lift found what appeared to be the original medieval tiled floor buried beneath the 19th century paving. The floor was only 10-13 cm below ground level and consisted of glazed tiles decorated with fleur-de-lys and an image of a man holding a stick (possibly a pilgrim). The floor is thought to be contemporary with the Great Cloister (AD 1397-1414). It was reburied after the excavation.
