Summary

Inhumation cemetery, Horton,approx. 200m.east of Horton Chapel. Six graves were found three were recorded. The site lies approx 200m east of Horton Chapel, on a north-west facing slope overlooking the River Stour. OD 25-30m.

Full Description

Inhumation cemetery of six graves were found, three were excavated, approx. 200m.east of Horton Chapel on a north-west facing slope overlooking the Stour, between 25-30m OD. Graves 1 & 3 probably dated to 6th or early 7th centuries.
Grave 1: adult with shield, spear,knife and buckle
Grave 2: juvenile, no grave goods. This grave was enclosed by a penunnular ditch.
Grave 3: juvenile with amber and glass beads and other objects.
A copper alloy cruciform brooch was found at the base of the Stour Valley at 5m OD.
This site was identified by a watching brief by Canterbury Archaeological Trust on a water main between TR116553 and 117550.
