Site of former Crown and Sceptre/The Orb Inn Public House, Ramsgate Road, Margate. A heritage assessment was undertaken in 2019 and a historic building survey was completed in 2020 in advance of the demolition of the building.
The Inn was thought to have been established in the early 19th century. A series of extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries altered the original layout and form of the building.
A late 20th century account describes the discovery of a chalk well at the site which may be contemporary with the construction of the Inn, or an earlier feature excavated to supply water to a cottage at the site.
The report concludes: "the ground-floor interior has been very extensively modernised and little can now be seen of historical interest. Some original parts of the first floor have seen relatively little alteration, but their features are of only minor interest…The main intrinsic heritage value of the building is in its two elevations towards Ramsgate Road. Despite the late twentieth-century alterations to the main frontage... some part of its original character survives. The long side elevation is also interesting and attractive with its varied fabric, painted signage (albeit recent), and the remains of the Chapel Hill House boundary wall" (from the original report, 1). The Chapel Hill House referred to above was originally a property situated next to the Inn.
The building has since been demolished and is no longer shown on the modern OS map. (1)
