Monument record MKE116078 - Barton Mill, Canterbury (watermill)

Summary

The Mill was formerly known as Kingsford Mill. This was the last watermill in Canterbury that was working for trade. For many years it was a paper mill, and then a corn mill. There were two waterwheels driving the millstones, and probably another waterwheel which drove other machinery. The millstones were latterly replaced by roller mills. There was a fire in 1951, after which the mill was modernised, and another fire in July 2004 meant the end of milling at Barton mill. Some of the buildings survive, converted to residential use.

Full Description

.During the 11th century much of the land at Bartons Mill was owned by Christ Church Priory. The mill site was the centre of barley collecting and malting. Following the dissolution the site passed to the crown and then a series private owners. It is not known what the buildings were then used for up to the end of the 17th century.

By the end of the 17th century a flour mill and a paper mill were working on the site. By 1795 the Kingsford brothers became the occupiers of the site and the mills remained in the family into the 20th century. In 1951 fire destroyed the 'New Mill' after which the buildings were used for animal feed production. A range of new buildings were added in the late 20th century before redevelopment in the early 2000s

In 2006 a building survey was carried out on all the remaining indistrial buildings on site prior to redevelopment. (1)
