Landscape record TQ 94 SW 158 - Dering Wood, historic post-medieval landscape

Summary

Dering Wood has probably been covered in woodland since at least the early medieval period. It has survived due to its wet condition and unsuitability for agriculture, because it lies on the margins of several parishes and on the margins of several Jutish dens. After 1865 the woodland was owned by Sir Edward Dering who laid out a system of rides and a carriage way. The woodland contains numerous features related to 19th century woodland management.
